For 2022, Subaru's rally-inspired road vehicle, the WRX, receives its long-awaited redesign, enabling it to compete with the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Acura Integra. A new chassis, an upgraded interior, and a 2.4-liter flat-four engine with 271 horsepower are all part of the update. Subaru has kept its two available transmissions, a six-speed manual and a CVT they refer to as the SPT, or Subaru Performance Transmission. The latter is the one we drove, and despite letting the WRX row its own eight fictitious gears, we still enjoyed it.
It's a thrill to squeeze the new 2.4-liter turbocharged flat-four. Although its 258 lb-ft of maximum torque now peaks at 2,000 rpm, there was still a significant amount of turbo lag, especially when the car was in the wrong "gear." We could fix that in the manual car by constantly keeping the turbo spooled up in the higher RPMs, but it's more difficult to adjust the SPT here to get the same results. The SPT accelerates quickly—quick enough for any casual driver—getting from 0 to 100 km/h in 6.1 seconds, which is one-tenth longer than the manual WRX. This discrepancy is predictable given that the SPT weighs 63 kg more as a result of the gearbox and safety equipment.
Those who don't want three pedals can choose the SPT without feeling bad about it. It naturally requires less input from the driver, but because of this, it actually seems more relaxing while driving, enabling us to focus on the WRX's other enhanced details. The SPT isn't as physically or acoustically unpleasant as it once was because to improved cabin insulation. The only things that confused us were the odd speed at which it downshifted and the lack of any engine movement when we withdrew the paddle. We would even describe the phony gear shifts as seamless and believable.
The SPT did exhibit some rough edges during strong braking maneuvers and low speed creeps, where it appeared unsure of where to land in the rpm range to take advantage of the circumstance. The WRX's performance potential won't be lost to individuals who want a WRX but are scared by a manual transmission; otherwise, drivers would be hard-pressed to perceive any difference or change in driving style with this compared to a conventional torque converter. Instead, we believe that the SPT complements the car's improved civility.
The WRX has good handling, enjoys being forced into bends, and clings tenaciously to sweeping, high-speed curves. To truly shake the WRX, deliberate weight and balance shifts are required. With its sticky tires and full-time AWD system, which doesn't merely deliver power to the front or rear wheels when grip is needed, there is an excessive amount of mechanical grip. It continuously drives all four wheels. Both good and bad come from this. Since wheels are powered continuously, fuel economy worsens. Though the manual receives higher fuel ratings, the SPT is really potentially more fuel-efficient. The SPT's average fuel economy is 10.8 L/100 km, which isn't bad but is a bit more than that of the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Honda Civic Si. Additionally, Subaru advises using premium 91-octane gas for the engine.
Less body roll and lean than before, the WRX strikes an outstanding mix between comfort and rigidity. In relation to that, the ride is arguably the biggest change for 2022 because it is more comfortable than before. It is less harsh on the road, better damped when navigating rough surfaces, and doesn't get unsteady with little road bumps. More than a Civic Si or Golf GTI, there is still excessive wind noise that enters the cabin, but it is tolerable and can be blocked out by the Harmon Kardon audio system. Although it's marginally improved, Subaru audio systems have long been criticized for their lack of bass, shrill registers, and hollow frequencies. Nevertheless, it is poor to say the least and still needs more bass and treble to make your songs seem genuine and honest.
On the other hand, even at engine start, the WRX exhaust booms and is bass-heavy as usual. It's more like you're pulling a buzzing beehive than a drone per se. Although the noise isn't particularly bothersome, it can become tiresome on extended car journeys because the steady bass echoes every water bottle stored in its holders. Although it sounds confrontational, it is not extremely noisy or immature. Because we were revving the manual-equipped cars more vigorously in lower gears, we heard that they were a little noisier. That isn't utilized by the CVT, but what important is that the turbo-four makes the distinctive burbling noises that a WRX should.
A good amount of work has been done on the interior. Although there are a lot of black plastics—as there should be in a $40,000 sports sedan—the quality and workmanship are superb. The switchgear may not have a costly feel, but it feels sturdy and long-lasting, providing clear and favorable feedback. When the buttons are depressed, there is no wiggle. In this day and age, it seems strange to describe analog gauges as refreshing, but since venerable companies like Porsche and Rolls-Royce have already shifted to the digital age, it is what it is.
They are placed on either side of the sizable steering wheel and the unusually vertically oriented touchscreen. It has smooth interfaces and was carefully created to be user-friendly. We love that higher traffic services like cabin temperature and audio volume still have physical buttons and dials. Notably, there is no button specifically for auto brake hold. Toggling it requires entering the touchscreen's car settings menu every time, and it always defaults to the off position when the car is turned off. a little irritant.
No matter which direction you choose to row the gears, the 2022 model gives the same thrilling WRX experience with a dash of civility and a splash of comfort. The SPT increases the attractiveness of Subaru's well-liked sports sedan as a daily vehicle while maintaining the WRX's sound and acceleration characteristics. same game. extra sedan
